Origins of Fusion Jiu-jitsu
In 1997, Derek Bindner forged a unique path in the world of martial arts with the creation of Fusion Jiu-jitsu (FJJ). Unlike the competitive arenas of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ), FJJ distills the most practical elements of various martial disciplines, combat sports, and warrior traditions into a cohesive system focused on functional self-protection, real-world fitness, and personal growth, without formal competition.
An Integrated Approach
Professor Bindner, an accomplished martial artist and seasoned professional with expertise in close protection and executive security, designed FJJ to cultivate well-rounded individuals capable of navigating conflict with intelligence and poise. A black belt in multiple disciplines, including Japanese ju-jitsu, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, aikido, karate, and tae kwon do, a silver medalist heavyweight kickboxer, and mental toughness coach, Bindner's system reflects his diverse experience and commitment to useful, effective training.
A Legacy of Empowerment
As the founder and owner of Bindner Academy, Professor Bindner has dedicated almost three decades to teaching Jiu-jitsu, empowering students to become confident, competent, and compassionate individuals equipped to handle adversity with grace.
So you’re not just learning moves—you’re learning how to handle situations from start to finish.
The goal isn’t to win medals—it’s to help you become more capable, confident, and resilient in everyday life.
About Fusion Jiu-jitsu
By combining the most effective elements of martial arts, combat sports, and self-defence programs, with other warrior disciplines, Fusion Jiu-jitsu training focuses on practical self-defence, real-world fitness, and mental resilience — not flashy techniques or sport-only training.
Our 5 Core Elements
Every class is built around five key areas of tactics and strategy:
Mindset
Stay composed and make smart decisions under pressure, using breath control, awareness, and critical thinking skills.
Movement
Remain in control using positioning, momentum, functional fitness, and footwork to stay safe and healthy.
Striking
Learn simple, effective distracting and destroying techniques for self-protection.
Control
Manage standing, escorting, and ground situations without escalating violence.
Grappling
Handle close-range and ground situations with confidence.
Whether you’re stepping onto the mats for the first time or looking for training with real purpose, you’ll find a team that pushes you, supports you, and helps you become part of something bigger than yourself.
Our mission is simple:
Help ordinary people become confident, capable, and prepared under pressure.
Attending FJJ classes, you’ll develop:
-
practical self-defence skills
-
functional fitness
-
mental toughness
-
discipline and confidence
-
a strong community of like-minded people
This isn’t just about learning how to protect and defend.
It’s about becoming someone your family can rely on — while surrounding yourself with people who push you to grow stronger in every area of life.
The Power of Fusion
Fusion Jiu-jitsu leverages the most effective elements of multiple martial arts, combat sports, and warrior disciplines into one complete approach to self-protection:
BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU (BJJ)
Learn how to stay calm, control larger opponents, and defend yourself in close-range situations.
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu focuses on leverage, positioning, escapes, submissions, and ground control — allowing a smaller person to effectively defend against someone bigger and stronger using technique instead of brute force.
BJJ builds:
-
confidence under pressure
-
problem-solving skills
-
composure in stressful situations
-
real-world grappling ability
MUAY THAI KICKBOXING
Known as “The Art of Eight Limbs,” Muay Thai develops powerful and effective striking using punches, elbows, knees, and kicks.
Muay Thai training improves:
-
cardio and conditioning
-
balance and coordination
-
striking power
-
speed and endurance
-
confidence in stand-up self-defence situations
It’s one of the most effective systems in the world for practical striking and total-body fitness.
KRAV MAGA
Built for real-world self-defence, Krav Maga teaches instinctive movements and practical responses to dangerous situations, neutralizing the physical threat immediately by targeting the vulnerable parts of the body.
Krav Maga concepts help students:
-
react under pressure
-
create space and escape danger
-
defend against aggressive attacks
-
improve awareness and decision-making
Training is fast-paced, empowering, and designed for everyday people — not professional fighters.
AIKIDO
Aikido teaches control, awareness, timing, and the ability to redirect force instead of meeting aggression head-on.
Through movement, breath control, and body positioning, students develop:
-
calmness under stress
-
improved balance and coordination
-
situational awareness
-
the ability to stay composed during conflict
Aikido adds an important mental and strategic element to the FJJ system.
The Dynamics of Fusion Jiu-jitsu
Fusion Jiu-jitsu (FJJ) operates on a philosophy that transcends traditional competitive frameworks. "Non-competitive" in this context means shedding the constraints of rules, time limits, weight classes, and regulated environments – not the absence of rigorous training. In the LAB program, FJJ students engage in intense, reality-based drills designed to forge adaptable, capable practitioners.
Pressure Testing Without Competition
While FJJ circumvents formal competition, it emphasizes practical application. After mastering core techniques and strategies, students are encouraged to test their skills in controlled, safeguarded environments, using protective gear to minimize risk. This approach cultivates proficiency in neutralizing threats, not trophies or titles.
Progression Through Proficiency
The FJJ belt system tracks students' growth through demonstrable and applied skills. Advancement requires mastery of verbal de-escalation and physical self-defence techniques – scripted and freestyle, solo and multiple attackers, armed and unarmed – complemented by stand-up sparring, takedowns, and controlled grappling with partners. Each level confirms a practitioner's ability to protect themselves and others with precision and control.
