Our Jiu-jitsu

SIMPLE. FUNCTIONAL. ADAPTABLE.

OLD SCHOOL JIU-JITSU, REFINED.

NO FANCY. JUST FUNCTION, FLOW, AND FUN.

Bridging the gap between sport, tradition, and reality, Bindner Academy teaches Jiu-jitsu as a functional self-protection, movement, and grappling martial art. It is uniquely different from most modern Jiu-jitsu schools in three main categories:

  1. Our Focus: Rooted in a traditional martial arts foundation, functional self-defense, and grappling fundamentals, for personal development and building confidence.

  2. Our Techniques: Prioritizing practical, safe, efficient, and effective tactics and strategies, utilizing strikes, throws, controls, takedowns, escorts, holds and submissions, with critical thinking, verbal de-escalation, multiple attackers, weapons, and grappling to neutralize common and uncommon threats.

  3. Our Philosophy: Simplicity, functionality and adaptability with discipline, respect, and intelligence, while embracing tradition with evolution.

While foundations are the base, functionality describes the purpose (practical and useful), and fundamentals point to essential core concepts and principles - which guides our behaviour.

PRINCIPLE-BASED

Students learn safe and efficient methods of employing the mechanical advantage, using fulcrums and levers, body/bio mechanics, timing, connection, distance management, weight distribution, angles and base. This type of intelligent training will not only lower the frequency and severity of injuries, but will also lower the amount of energy one expends to accomplish their objectives, and show them how to receive more enjoyment out of their Jiu-jitsu training.

ALIVENESS AND FLOW

If you want to learn how to defend and protect yourself FOR REAL, you have to practice against someone who is fighting back. Progressive resistance allows everyone, regardless of experience, to do this in a safe and fun training environment in order to develop true confidence.

FUN

We plan to train for the rest of our lives, and we hope that our students do too. If we are going to spend this much time working on developing functional life-skills, we should be having fun doing it. If we are training for self-defense, we should work very hard at times, but it should not always be a grind. The training sessions should be so enjoyable that we look forward to each class.

ULTIMATE REWARD

Finally, Jiu-jitsu offers a unique form of stress relief. When you’re on the mat, you’re fully engaged in the moment, and focused on the task at hand. The stresses of daily life fade away as you immerse yourself in the flow of training. This mental escape, coupled with the physical workout, leaves you feeling refreshed and ready to take on life’s challenges.

THE 5 ELEMENTS OF JIU-JITSU:

1) Science:  Physical, Physiology, Physics, Psychology, Philosophy

2) Stand up: Distance Management, Takedowns, Throws & Controls

3) Striking: Using the Body for Distractions & Destruction

4) â€‹Controlling: Escorts, Holds, Joint Locks & Pins

5) Grappling: Ground Defense, Submissions & Disengagement

Training in Jiu-jitsu may be challenging, but the rewards are worth every struggle and drop of sweat. Whether you’re looking to learn self-protection skills, get in shape, or take up a new hobby, Jiu-jitsu at Bindner Academy has something to offer everyone.
