Origins of Fusion Jiu-jitsu
In 1997, Derek Bindner forged a unique path in the world of martial arts with the creation of Fusion Jiu-jitsu (FJJ). Unlike the competitive arena of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA), and Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ), FJJ distills the most practical elements of various martial disciplines, combat sports, and warrior traditions into a cohesive system focused on functional self-protection, real-world fitness, and personal growth.
A Holistic Approach
Professor Bindner, an accomplished martial artist and seasoned professional with expertise in close protection and executive security, designed FJJ to cultivate well-rounded individuals capable of navigating conflict with intelligence and poise. A black belt in multiple disciplines, including Japanese and Brazilian jiu-jitsu, aikido, karate, and tae kwon do, and a silver medalist kickboxer, Bindner's system reflects his diverse experience and commitment to effective, non-competitive training.
A Legacy of Empowerment
As the founder and owner of Bindner Academy, Professor Bindner has dedicated almost three decades to teaching Fusion Jiu-jitsu, empowering students to become confident, competent, and compassionate individuals equipped to handle adversity with grace. The Fusion Jiu-jitsu system combines:
-
Real-world verbal and physical self-defence
-
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (grappling fundamentals)
-
Muay Thai Kickboxing (striking fundamentals)
-
Yoshinkan Aikido (control & pinning fundamentals)
-
Krav Maga (violence navigation fundamentals)
-
Movement, breath, and awareness training
-
Critical thinking
So you’re not just learning moves—you’re learning how to handle situations from start to finish.
The goal isn’t to win medals—it’s to help you become more capable, confident, and resilient in everyday life.
The Dynamics of Fusion Jiu-jitsu
Fusion Jiu-jitsu (FJJ) operates on a philosophy that transcends traditional competitive frameworks. "Non-competitive" in this context means shedding the constraints of rules, time limits, weight classes, and regulated environments – not the absence of rigorous training. In the LAB program, FJJ students engage in intense, reality-based drills designed to forge adaptable, capable practitioners.
Pressure Testing Without Competition
While FJJ circumvents formal competition, it emphasizes practical application. After mastering core techniques and strategies, students are encouraged to test their skills in controlled, safeguarded environments, using protective gear to minimize risk. This approach cultivates proficiency in neutralizing threats, not trophies or titles.
Progression Through Proficiency
The FJJ belt system tracks students' growth through demonstrable and applied skills. Advancement requires mastery of verbal de-escalation and physical self-defence techniques – scripted and freestyle, solo and multiple attackers, armed and unarmed – complemented by stand-up sparring, takedowns, and controlled grappling with partners. Each level confirms a practitioner's ability to protect themselves and others with precision and control.
